ANNUAL REPORT OF IMA COCHIN BRANCH FOR THE YEAR OF 2003 - 2005

 

I have great pleasure in presenting you a brief report of activities of this IMA year 2003 – 2004.

 

The new team of office bearers were installed on 22nd April 2003 at Hotel Abad Plaza where hon’ble Justice Dr. Narayana Kurup was the Chief Guest.   In this meeting all the past presidents were felicitated.

 

We had a lot of hectic activities during this year including Scientific – Socio cultural involving the subspecialities, district administration, NGO and Hospitals.   The highlights of which is presented here.

 

During the current year 95 members were added taking our total to 1037.   45 members in PPS and 53 members in SSS were also added.

 

Interaction with Dignitaries: Following dignitaries attended various functions arranged by our branch:   Sri. C. M. Dinesh Moni, (Mayor of Cochin) Sri. Gyanesh Kumar, IAS,(District Collector, Ekm), Hon’ble Justice M. Ramachandran (High Court of Kerala), Mr. Sebastian Paul (M.P.), Mr. K. Babu (MLA), Hon’ble Minister Mr. P. Sankaran, Hon’ble Minister Sri. Kadavoor Sivadasan, Hon’ble Minister Prof. K. V. Thomas, Cine Actors Sri. Suresh Gopi, Sri. Dileep, Sri. Siddique, Cine Actress Miss. Jyothirmayi, Mr. P. V. Gangadharan (Chairman, KSFDC) Mr. Siyad Koker (President, Kerala Film Chamber).  

 

The Scientific Session included 3 Symposia, 7 Lectures, 3 CME and clinical discussions.    Most of them were held at out side of IMA Hall and was of excellent standard and well appreciated by the members.   Most of the speakers participated in the Scientific sessions were our own members of different specialties.

 

Special mention should be given to the novel programmes of CME on Torture Medicine and chemical accidents.

 

We observed all the important days in the current year with appropriate activities. World Health Day, Mothers Day, World Asthma Day, World No Tobacco Day, Doctors Day, ORS Day, Teenage Day, World Breast Feeding Week, World Heart Day, World Elders Day, Blood Donation Week, World Mental Day, World Diabetic Day and World AIDS Day.

 

IMA for the first time in the history of IMA Cochin Womens’ Wing was inaugurated on 30th September.  Mrs. Pameela Anna Mathew, OEN was the Chief Guest.   Dr. Lisamma was installed as the Chairperson with her team.   I am glad to note that they are having lot of activities.

 

Perhaps most important achievement in this year was of IMA Eye Bank and formation of IMA Crisis Management Cell.

 

IMA Eye Bank: Hon’ble Health Minister Sri. P. Sankaran inaugurated the Eye Bank – NAYANA (a project of IMA Cochin in association with Rotary Club of Cochin Central) on 17th August 2003 at Hotel Abad Plaza.      Sri. C. M. Dinesh Moni, Worshipful Mayor presided over and Cine Artist Sri. Suresh Gopi presented the donor card to the IMA State President Dr. N. V. Markose.

 

IMA Crisis Management Cell:  Crisis Management Cell of IMA Cochin was inaugurated by Hon’ble Health Minister Sri. Kadavoor Sivadasan under the presence of Dr. N. V. Markose, IMA State President, Dr. M. K. C. Nair, IAP National President and Sri. Amanulla, Convenor, Special Projects & Programme, National Safety Council.   The Convenor of the Cell is Dr. Abraham Varghese and three zonal co-ordinators on 28th March 2004.

 

We are bringing out the updated members directory which will be released during this inaugural function.

 

With the help of district administration we conducted lot of awareness camps among the public on subjects like Leptospirosis, Dengue Fever, Hepatitis B Vaccine.

 

This year we were able to bring out the monthly newsletter containing the current activities of every month.   Other important publications included leaflets on guidelines to doctors on SARS, Dengue Fever and Leptospirosis.

 

This year we enlivened our website www.imacochin.org around 590 visited the site. Thanks to its web master Dr. Ramesh S. Shenoy.

 

In connection with the World No Tobacco Day we conducted on a survey on tobacco practices in youth and published our finding on 31st May 2003.

 

We could upgrade our generator to 32 KV with the support of IMA Blood Bank which has enabled us to utilize our facilities fully throughout today.

 

This year we become the first IMA Branch in India to launch an online medical reference library with international journals and 40 full textbooks available.

 

We have conducted 3 medical camps in this year out of which one was in Lakshadweep.

 

IMA Blood Bank: This flagship wing of IMA Cochin continued to perform with more strength and dedication.   A total of 24,000 units of blood were collected in one year and 51,030 units of blood and its components were issued.   130 Blood donation camps were conducted in and around Ernakulam District.

 

IMA Charitable Medicine Bank: We could distribute medicine4s worth Rs.85,000/- to poor and needy patients.   Service of part time Pharmacist continues to be available.

 

We had regular monthly executive meeting and the last executive meeting was held at Tea County, Munnar.

 

This year family nite was celebrated in a grand style on November 9th at Chirackal Gardens where cine artist Dilip and actress Miss. Jyothirmayi were guests.   

 

We gave reception to National President Dr. P. V. George, State President Dr. N. V. Markose and Secretary Dr. Jose M. Malana and Treasurer Dr. Sebastian,

 

We felicitated the cardiac transplant team of Medical Trust Hospital on 28th May 2003.

 

Many of our members were honoured during this year 1) Dr. V. D. Pradeepkumar was the Joint Secretary of IMA Kerala, 2) Dr. Krishnamoorthy was the winner of the Dr. Eapen Samuel Award, 3) Dr. Varghese Cherian was chosen as the best branch President of the Kerala State IAP, 4) Dr. V. K. Sahajanandan was elected as President of API Kerala  and Dr. Junaid Rehman as the Secretary of KGMOA.   Dr. V. P. Kuriyipe being elected as the National President of IADVL has achieved the most coveted position.   Dr. Abraham K. Paul and Dr. M. Venugopal were awarded FIAP. Dr. M. Venugopal, Dr. Jose Chacko Periapuram, Dr. Moosa Kunji was bagged Mother Teresa Award by Deputy Speaker Sri. P. M. Sayeed.

 

The lost the following members during this year Dr. R. D’Souza, Pioneer ENT Surgeon of Cochin, Dr. Gheevarghese – first Diabetologist of International fame, Dr. V. K. Thomas our past State President and finally Dr. P. A. Verghese, Director & founder of Medical Trust Hospital.

 

We thank the trustees of IMA Blood Bank especially Dr. E. Varghese Mathew & Dr. K. Narayanankutty.

 

This year I had lot of help guidance and co-operation from many of my fellow members most of them shared equal if not more responsibilities than me in many of the assigned activities.   I am grateful to each and every one of you.      But I will be failing in my duty if I don’t specially thank Dr. K. Ajayakumar, Dr. E. Varghese Mathew, Dr. Abraham K Paul, Dr. N. Dinesh, Dr. Abraham Varghese, Dr. Vinod B. Nair, Dr. V. P. Kuriyipe, Dr. Babu John Mathews, Dr. Lisamma Joseph, Dr. M. Narayanan, Dr. G. N. Ramesh, Dr. K. Sivadas, Dr. Sujit Vasudevan, Dr. K. Narayanankutty, Dr. V. D. Pradeepkumar, Dr. Philip Augustine and hospital directors.

 

Our financial position this year has been excellent even though we had most of our general body meeting conducted outside the IMA Hall most lavish and a grand style, and an executive meeting at tea county, Munnar.   We could save Rs:35,000/- from the general body meeting and Rs:10,000/- from the contributory executive committee meetings.   I thank Dr. Ramesh S. Shenoy for the shroud management of finances.

 

All these novel projects have been envisaged by our President Dr. M. Venugopal, which was successfully executed by his team.   I could not imagine without his proper guidance and help these projects could have materialized.

 

This is an opportunity to thank the press and media for their unstated support and involvement in all our activities.

 

This is a summary of the major activities of IMA Cochin from October 2003 to April 2004.   We are indebted to all members of the Executive Committee for their unstinted and active guidance.   We express our sincere thanks to sponsors of various sessions.   Mr. Shabu and Mr. Hari of IMA Office continued to do exemplary job.   Mr. Shaji and Mr. Joms of IMA Library and Mr. Ananda Pai, Pharmacist of IMA Medicine Bank deserve commendations for their sincere service.

 

We thank every member of IMA Cochin, for giving us an opportunity to serve the medical fraternity through the great organization, IMA.
